While many of us were asleep in warm beds, Poul Jensen was braving the cold of interior Alaska, searching for spectacular auroral displays. Beneath the Aurora is a compilation of some of his best work. It features a well-edited collection of time-lapse aurora with different evocative musical accompaniment for each sequence. In addition, the aurora displayed is not homogeneous; there are clips of quiet, pre-midnight arcs, substorm onsets and expansions, and highly-dynamic coronas, to name but a few. There are also some gorgeous non-auroral sequences showing Alaska at its best (during sun-up), for example, lakefront sunrises, curious cloudscapes above glaciers, and evidence of human activity such as car headlight trails.
For those who have not been to Alaska who long to experience its majesty, this film will certainly help convince you to go. It is also breathtakingly bitter-sweet to watch for those of us who no longer live in The Last Frontier.
